Pushing Daisies to shove pie down your pie hole

August 28th, 2008 / 1 Comment » / by Daisies

So what’s better than a Pushing Daisies star saving you from the deadly embrace of crystal meth? Not much, but the answer to that (and, lets face it, most other questions) is free freakin’ pie. ABC really doesn’t want you to forget about the whimsical show that was cut short by the writers’ strike, so Pushing Daisies is hitting the road.

Pushing Daisies to shove pie down your pie hole

ABC has outfitted an Airstream trailer to look like The Pie Hole, the shop in which most of Daisies’ action takes place, and is driving it across the country to give fans free pie. In addition to the delicious confections, the temporary Pie Hole will feature props from the show and plasma TVs on which fans can watch footage from the show.

The Pushing Daisies Tour begins this Sunday and makes 10 stops. Follow me after the jump for the full schedule.

  • August 31: Anaheim, CA – Downtown Disney
  • September 7: San Francisco, CA – Ghirardelli Square– Chocolate Festival
  • September 10: Los Angeles, CA – Santa Monica 3rd Street Promenade
  • September 12: Las Vegas, NV – Fashion Show Mall
  • September 14: Phoenix, AZ – Westgate Complex
  • September 17: Denver, CO – Larimer Square
  • September 20: Dallas, TX – Addison Oktober Fest
  • September 24: Chicago, IL – Lincoln Park
  • September 26: Philadelphia, PA – The Shops at Liberty Place
  • September 29: New York, NY – Times Square

ABC has also started a site that you can go to to follow The Pie Hole’s progress at pushingdaisiestour.com. It doesn’t appear to be up at the moment, but should be functional shortly.

I don’t know if it’s my love of Pushing Daisies, or simply my love of pie, but this sounds like the best idea ever to me. I think I may even risk venturing into Times Square to see it. In fact, I wish more shows would do something like this. I want the Project Runway contestants to come by and make me a dress or a Grey’s Anatomy trailer to come give me medical advice. What other shows do you think should hit the road?

Monaco Grand Prix – It’s In Europe

May 17th, 2013 / No Comments » / by Daisies

The Circuit de Monaco runs through the streets of La Condamine and Monte Carlo, around Monaco harbour. The first Monaco Grand Prix was organised by Anthony Noghs in 1929, and is regarded as one of the very prestigious automobile races in the world.

The first Grand Prix of Monaco was won by William Grover-Williams, subsequently followed by others great names like Schumacher, Senna, Prost, Fangio, Graham Hill.

It’s the slowest and the hardest of the World Formula 1 Championship.

The Grand Prix of Monaco is a great mythical race that all of the pilots dream to win on the circuit of the Principality.

Coming to the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix is one instant unforgettable that you must prepare and anticipate.

Today the Grand Prix of Monaco is worldwide known even by the least excited of motor sport and after various change on the trail (turn Sainte – Dedicate, the turn of the restaurant La Rascasse), the circuit measures currently 3, 367 km. Because of its length the Grand Prix is restricted to 78 turns.

It truly is in 1929, on April 14th at 13:30, under the honorary Presidency of S.A.S. the Prince Louis II that the Grand Prix of Monaco was born thanks in particular to President Anthony Noghes who showed a strong will to be able to help you to organize in the smallest European state (after the Vatican) an event of this scale. His notion strongly supported by the Prince Louis II may be concretized thanks to its assistance and motivation of the famous pilot Monegasque, Louis Chiron.

To win in Monaco is hard because even a small mistake within the streets of the principality is critical.

The circuit’s elevations shifts, tight corners and a narrow path make it one-of the trickiest in Formula One. It comprises both the slowest corner in the activity – the Grand Hotel hairpin, taken at just 50kph (31mph) and one of the quickest (the flat out kink in the tunnel, three turns beyond the hairpin, taken at 260kph (160mph).

While overtaking is notoriously hard, the circuit’s twists and turns favour the skill of the driver over the power of the automobiles.

In 2012 Mark Webber made it three victories in a row for Red Bull Racing.

Television is a vehicle for advertising, a source of entertainment, and news. It is also the main medium for molding public opinion. With the development of technology, television plays a vital role. Photographers use television to show how they a good in achieving invisible mannequin photography. Clothing ads and style can be displayed via television where these photographers shows fashion designed after their editing, to make more attractive displays. For more ideas on invisible mannequin photographs you can browse the site http://amerciafashion.com.

In the year 1948, a legendary conductor Arturo Toscanni made his first of Ten TV appearances conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra, and Texaco Star Theater, starring comedian Milton Berle, became television’s first gigantic hit show.

At present, the entertainment industry grows fast and it is the main entertainment that most of the people enjoy even at their home and office. In 2012, it was reported that television revenue grows faster than film for major media companies.

Worth Watching

March 31st, 2013 / 5 Comments » / by Daisies

Pushing Daisies combines the love-with-obstacles relationship of a great screwball comedy with the brightly candy-colored visual imagination of the (first) Willy Wonka movie or The Wizard of Oz. There’s even a plummy voiced narrator (Jim Dale, who sometimes amusingly contradicts the characters) with a flowery sense of diction. I find it odd that I’m comparing this completely unique show to the best kids’ movies, but there’s something both very adult — dealing with themes of life and death and who deserves to live and die — and very childlike about this show. More on that later.

It’s by Bryan Fuller, who previously created Dead Like Me (also about an unusual relationship with death and judgment) and Wonderfalls (where a loner tried to set wrong things right through convoluted chains of twists). Like that show, this is a romantic fantasy, only mixed with murder procedural.

Ned (Lee Pace, previously the brother in Wonderfalls) has the power of reanimation. When he touches something dead, he can bring it back to life. There are unpleasant rules, though — if he touches it again, it dies again. For good. And if he doesn’t return the dead to the dead, then an equivalent something else nearby dies, randomly. This amazing ability has never brought him pleasure. He became a loner, with a secret he can’t share. Melancholy, since he’s given more power than any person should have. And an outstanding pie maker, because he restores rotting fruit to use as fillings.

Emerson Cod, a grumpy private eye played wonderfully by the imposing Chi McBride, knows Ned’s secret. Together, they created a business. Ned touches the corpses of those who died mysteriously. They wake up, they tell him what happened, he kills them again, and he and Emerson collect the reward money. These deaths are often completely bizarre, and the resulting special effects makeup is amazing. (Guy with face eaten by dog, for instance, or guy stepped on by horse.)

His boyhood next-door neighbor, best friend, and sweetheart is Chuck (Charlotte Charles, played by Anna Friel), whom he rediscovers after seeing her body on the news. Chuck lives with her aunts, synchronized swimming performers who are nearly the best thing about the show. They’re played by Swoosie Kurtz in an eyepatch and Ellen Greene, whom I best know as the helium-voiced singer from Little Shop of Horrors. They’ve been trapped inside by social phobia, so ironically, Chuck finally gets to leave the house, see the world, and have adventures after her death. Thus, the main conflict of the show: Ned and Chuck rediscover and love each other, but because he reanimated her, if they touch, he’ll lose her forever.

There’s also the pie waitress, Olive Snook (the always terrific petite Kristin Chenoweth), who has an obsessive crush on Ned. Thankfully, this isn’t dragged out. She suspects Ned and Chuck’s “surprising lack of physical contact” from the beginning, but she soon finds herself more concerned with figuring out why Chuck faked her death (as she thinks). Olive takes care of Digby, Ned’s dog, also no longer dead. The survival of this dog from his childhood, once he reincarnated the pet, suggests some odd implications about those brought back, perhaps to be immortal until touched again.

This first season consists of nine episodes. The second is unfortunately the worst of the bunch. (For this series, that’s still pretty darn good.) An automobile engineer for the experimental Dandy Lion car (which runs on dandelions) is run over. Fun visuals, but the pacing doesn’t really click, and a lot from episode one is reiterated for us. (On the DVD set, it seems repetitive; watched weekly, it probably helped firm up key concepts.) On the plus side, Kristin sings “Hopelessly Devoted to You”.

Worth Watching

Episode three is the first where storylines make major strides forward, as Ned and Emerson investigate the death of Chuck’s funeral director. There’s more with the aunts, a hilarious Winnie the Pooh reference, and a wonderfully convoluted fight for the climax involving a Chinese Southerner. The series only continues to climb from there:

  • Episode four has windmills, a wingless carrier pigeon, a prison love story, and the song “Birdhouse in Your Soul”.
  • Episode five, the Halloween show, featuring Olive’s history as a jockey and a killer ghost horse.
  • Episode six is about a polygamist breeder. (“They make babies for their polygamy cult?” says Olive, until Emerson clarifies “dog breeder”, after which Olive says, “They make dogs for their polygamy cult?”) This episode also features a very weird opening sequence that directly addresses the Ned/Chuck/Olive triangle.
  • Episode seven guest-stars Paul Reubens as a noted “nose” (smell expert) and a case with an explosive scratch-and-sniff book. Olive and Chuck work together, trying to get the mermaid aunts back in the water.
  • Episode eight has Molly Shannon guest star as the owner of a new, competing candy store.
  • The wintry episode nine is the most Tim Burton-like of them all, with despair in a snowstorm, a frozen relationship, and bodies trapped in snowmen.

The extras are minimal. The way they handled Pie Time: Time for Pie, a set of featurette clips, means you have to push a lot of buttons to see everything. For each episode, you click 2-3 pieces of pie that open the clips. They include Bryan Fuller, the production designer, director Barry Sonnenfeld, and/or Lee Pace talking about aspects of each episode and favorite scenes. There’s also a fold-out insert that resembles an old-style menu in the package.

So, back to the theme of recapturing childhood. Notice that Ned is a pie maker because Mom was baking pies when she died. Chuck was his first and best friend. And the nature of their relationship means that they love each other desperately but he can never touch her again. This is summed up by Chuck’s literal statement in the first episode, “I’d kiss you if it wouldn’t kill me.” Thus, a love that’s forced to be un-sexual (or perhaps pre-sexual).

I admire the ways the show emphasizes this (for example, showing them reaching towards each other on opposite sides of the same wall) and finds clever ways to work around it. It’s refreshing to see wit used to emphasize affection (instead of lust). I like this love story because it’s not about adolescent angst — oh, noes, their love can never be because they can never touch! — but mature problem-solving as they find ways to make their relationship work for them. I don’t want to go on and on about this, but there are too many people screwing up too many commitments because all they know of love is the physical and they’re not willing to work to build something with someone compatible.

It’s a challenging show in odd ways. There’s a lot going on, some of which you won’t realize until much later. There’s a fascination, best demonstrated by the narrator, with exact time — “Ned was nine years, twenty-seven weeks, six days, and three minutes old” — which emphasizes both Ned’s minute-long death constraint and the need to be conscious of how our time on earth is limited. We don’t get forever. We don’t even get a second chance, unlike Chuck.

(Let me stop here to make a small observation. If you’re looking for entertainment where women talk to each other about something other than men, this is a terrific show for that, with all kinds of bonds forming among the four lead women, especially Olive and the aunts.)

There’s also a love of wordplay and symbolism that’s old-fashioned and touching. “Chuck came ready-made from the Play-Doh Fun Factory of life,” the narrator says in the “pie-lette”. Plus, the costumes and scenery are all picked to be classic or timeless or from another era. (Check out the cars, for instance, or some of Chuck’s dresses.)

If you want something truly different and very very good, watch and savor this season. Unlike so much other television, the show demands your full attention but rewards it profusely. It’s an adult fairy tale, for those of us who know how precious whimsy can be.

The gorgeous visuals are made for digital reproduction, so definitely watch this in high definition if you can. Episodes can be watched online if you need a sample. Season two debuts on October 1. To promote the show, they’re sending a mobile Pie Hole restaurant across the country. The official DVD site has more information.

Pushing Daisies: The Pies

November 19th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Daisies

We know some of you are fans of “Pushing Daisies,” and we recently discussed the show’s honey-related story lines, but we could hardly let this month pass without a mention of the show’s primary food theme: Pie!

Read on for recipes from the show, including one that requires a certain magical power.

Pushing Daisies: The Pies

Many of the show’s episodes center around pie, and much of the action takes place at Ned’s restaurant, the Pie Hole. The place itself is shaped like a giant pie and it serves as a meeting spot for Ned, Charlotte and their detective partner Emerson Cod as they discuss each murder mystery case and plot their next move. Behind the counter, Ned’s employee Olive Snook serves customers while she pines for her boss.

Pie helps Charlotte, aka Chuck, reconnect with her aunts Lily and Vivian in a small way. After Ned brought her back to life, Chuck decided that revealing herself to her grieving aunts would be more than they could bear, so she stays hidden, keeping an eye on them from afar. To cheer them up, she sends them a weekly apple pie with Gruyère baked into the crust, with an extra kick of antidepressants.

Chuck is hip to food trends. Last season, she tried to convince Ned that cup pies would be a big hit at the Pie Hole. Being a traditionalist, though, he didn’t go for it.

He also hates to let things go to waste, and his pantry is filled with rotting fruit. But Ned needs only to touch a moldy strawberry to bring it back to its prime and bake it into a tasty pie.

Pushing Daisies: Even Better Than Free Pie

September 29th, 2008 / No Comments » / by Daisies

As we all know, the early bird gets the free pie. Thus I dragged myself out of bed at 7am this morning to visit the Pie Hole, a mobile recreation of a pie shop from Pushing Daisies, a charming fantasy/mystery/romance series returning to ABC this fall.

New York City was the last stop in the Pushing Daisies “Touch of Wonder” Tour, which has been making its way across the country to promote the upcoming sophomore season of the show. I scored a free apple pie, as well as a spatula, pie cutter, and refrigerator magnet branded with the series logo. They also handed out DVDs of the recently released first season to fans who could answer trivia questions that were either embarrassingly simple (“What’s the name of Ned’s pie shop?”) or embarrassingly challenging (“In the second episode of the first season, what kind of fuel did the cars run on?”).

The show’s premise is a bit difficult to describe. The series pitch calls it a “forensic fairy tale,” which doesn’t help much, but once you watch an episode you’ll agree that it’s strangely appropriate. The plot focuses on Ned “the Pie-maker” (Lee Pace), who has the remarkable ability to bring the dead back to life with just a touch; a second touch kills it again permanently. If he allows the revived thing to live for longer than a minute, something nearby of equal value dies in exchange.

Ned uses his powers to bake the freshest fruit pies around and help solve murder mysteries for reward money—by interviewing the victims themselves. He also brings his childhood sweetheart Chuck (Anna Friel) back to life, permanently (and at the cost of another). The fact that he can’t touch her again without killing her is the source of much of the show’s conflict. Additionally, Ned feels responsible for the death of Chuck’s father, after accidentally reviving his own dead mother. Pushing Daisies is a heavily character-driven show with a true ensemble cast, co-starring Chi McBride, Ellen Greene, Swoosie Kurtz, and Broadway star Kristin Chenoweth, who had a musical number in an episode last season. Every character has a secret, and their complex motives and actions extend the plots beyond the formulaic.

Pushing Daisies: Even Better Than Free Pie

Despite the tragic results of Ned’s power and its implications on his relationships, the show manages to maintain a fair amount of levity, albeit with often dark and irreverent humor. Featuring bright colors, lavish special effects, sparkling writing, and inventive murder plots, Pushing Daisies is alternately heart-warming and heart-breaking, but always enjoyable. It consistently surprises the viewer, frequently seeming innocent while engaging in subtle double-entendre. This show mashes together so many different elements, it shouldn’t work—but instead it operates on several levels and offers something for everyone. The gorgeous visuals and direction and the whimsical narration by Jim Dale lend it a distinctively fairy tale flavor. Ned and Chuck are also one of cutest couples ever to grace your television screen.

Pushing Daisies: Even Better Than Free Pie

Pushing Daisies was created by Bryan Fuller, whose previous efforts Dead Like Me (Showtime) and Wonderfalls (Fox) were equally quirky and well-written, but suffered from typical network interference. The third time might be the charm for Fuller: Pushing Daisies received an early full-season order from ABC, then a second season renewal shortly after the writers’ strike truncated the first at only nine episodes. It’s also garnered plenty of awards and critical acclaim, not to mention a faithful fan base.

The second season premieres this Wednesday, October 1st at 8:00pm EST on ABC. Even if you missed the first season, I highly recommend you check it out. There are few shows on television this original and entertaining.

Click here to see some Blair Witch-like video of the event this morning outside of Good Morning America’s studios in Times Square. There is also an additional tour stop planned in NYC, tomorrow (Tuesday) morning at 8:30am at the ABC Studios (West 66th Street and Columbus Ave).

Pushing Daisies TV show: Free Pie in NYC on Monday

Yum, free pie from the television show Pushing Daisies on Monday (9/29) at ABC’s Time Square Studio.  The only problem is the time: 7am-9am, which is a little early for me to be awake let alone eating pie.

Pushing Daisies TV show: Free Pie in NYC on Monday

Did anyone get one at any of their previous stops?

The Pushing Daisies Touch of Wonder Tour

Did your mom make you watch ABC’s Pushing Daisies with her, too? Good, then you know it’s not that bad. Once you get past the fairy-tale narrative (I like to tune it out and focus on the sexual tension between the two mains), it’s a captivating romp for a Mom Show. The romantic drama all goes down in the Pie Hole, a bakery setting that sees owner Ned and his waitress Olive get sweet on each other. Wait, don’t run from Mother-Daughter TV Night yet. Ned’s got a dark secret that leads to a twist. He can’t touch Olive or she’ll die. Sounds like the boss-employee relationship you’d like to have, right?

Maybe you’re already a pie-hard fan (whoa). Or a baker at task to perfect your crust, your love life, and in need of a Wednesday evening television escape. I’m just a blogger who wishes that there was a Pie Hole in Philly so that I could have a serious piece of pecan.

On Friday, September 26 from 9am-2pm, The Pushing Daisies Touch of Wonder Tour sets up shop in Liberty Place for a day of freebies, balloons, and pie slices, right before the Wednesday, October 1st season premiere. Why not take Mom with you?

Pushing Daisies Comes to the Big Apple

September 25th, 2008 / 1 Comment » / by Daisies

A month ago, Kevin Dugan suggested that I open up my blog to other PR bloggers who might want to promote their client’s news on New York Buzz. Well, today, I’m officially announcing that I will accept your pitches. So if you’ve got a cool event in New York City you want to promote, my inbox will welcome you. Those who write FREE FOOD in the subject line will receive a particularly warm response ;)

Pushing Daisies Comes to the Big Apple

And to kick off this new start, I’d like to tell you all about an event that’s happening in the Big Apple next week that you should RUN, not walk, to:

Pushing Daisies Comes to the Big Apple

On Monday, September 29, ABC will be promoting the second season of “Pushing Daisies” by building a mini replica of Ned’s Bakery, The Pie Hole, in Times Square.

The press release, which Miguel Cancino brought to my attention, states that “Guests will be able to enjoy free pie and the company of an outgoing restaurant staff, all while experiencing charming décor from the show’s set. (…) In addition, “Pushing Daisies” footage will play on plasma televisions on site, and waitresses on whimsically decorated daisy bicycles will direct people to the restaurant prior to the event.”

Miguel: You had me at free pie.

And FYI, my office is located at 928 Broadway (Suite 801) – in case you don’t know what to do with the leftover pies…

She’s in NY- Pushing Dasies

Abc’s Good Morning America is pushing daisies with their Mobile Pie Hole – a truck that’s traveling the country this month, giving away free pie for to kick off the second season of Pushing Daisies. The Pie Hole will be in New York next Monday, September 29th, in Times Square with Good Morning America (Broadway Studios). The Mobile Pie Hole will be serving up free pie, pie-cutters, spatulas and more. I’ve read your blog before and thought that as a local New York blogger, you and your readers might want to stop by for some free pie!

She's in NY- Pushing Dasies

About “Pushing Daisies”From Bryan Fuller (“Heroes”) and Barry Sonnenfeld (“Men in Black”) comes an unprecedented blend of romance, crime procedural and high-concept fantasy in a forensic fairytale about a young man with a very special gift. Once upon a time, a mild-mannered boy named Ned realized he could touch dead things and bring them back to life. Grown-up Ned puts his ability to good use, not only touching dead fruit and making it ripe with everlasting flavor, but working with an investigator to crack murder cases by asking the deceased to name their killers. But the tale gets complicated, as all tales do, when Ned brings his childhood sweetheart, Chuck, back from the dead and keeps her alive. Chuck encourages him to use his power to help others, instead of merely solving mysteries and collecting the rewards. Life would be perfect for Ned and Chuck, except for one cruel twist: If he ever touches her again, she’ll go back to being dead, this time for good.

So Excited for the Pushing Daisies Premiere (and Free Pie!!)

Here’s a little glimpse into Brownie’s mind. Yesterday morning I was riding subway. No coffee yet. La la la…Reading the signs…Staring at people’s shoes…Those are cute…I wonder where she got them….Thinking about this evening…isn’t it premiere week? Pushing Daisies…mmm…PIE.

And sometimes the universe works in strange ways and provides free pie…

Yes, free pie. The Mobile Pie Hole is coming to town and it will be in New York next Monday, September 29th in Times Square with Good Morning America. They’ll be there from 7:00am until 9:00am giving away free pie in honor of the premiere of the second season of Pushing Daisies. Yup, free pie, pie-cutters, spatulas and more. Supplies are limited, so come early before they run out!

The Mobile Pie Hole has been traveling the country this month and already made stops in Los Angeles, Vegas, and Phoenix among others. Check out their pics here.

For those of you wondering what the heck does pie have to do with a TV show, Pushing Daisies, is offbeat comedy on ABC about a guy named Ned–a piemaker by trade–who can bring things back to life briefly with just one touch. It’s funny, it’s sweet. It’s different from the usual network fare.

So Excited for the Pushing Daisies Premiere (and Free Pie!!)

Follow the Pie Hole via their Twitter. And visit The Pushing Daisies Tour for more info and some of Ned’s recipes. I think I might still bake a pie…
